The Amarjit Singh Spina Bifida Foundation
The AJS Spina Bifida Foundation aims to bring awareness, support, resources and surgeries for children suffering from Spina Bifida in India via raising funding from the NRI community in USA. By connecting individual and corporate international financial donors with specific children and families in need, the foundation aims to improve the quality of life of afflicted children so they may be able to engage in everyday activities with their peers and friends and lead healthier socially integrated lives with reduced pain and mortality outcomes.
"Traversing my childhood, hand-in-hand with my elder brother, Billa Veerji, through the perils of the First Kashmir War as refugees - and then later witnessing his incredible suffering and death due to Spina Bifida, inspired me to become a doctor against all odds.
The memories of my brothers encouraging words and prayers for my success, despite his own decaying health, continue to motivate me to bring awareness to the preventability of this disease.
His loss fuels me on, even in my retirement to provide resources and surgeries to afflicted children and their families and alleviate their suffering.
Through this Foundation, I envision helping children suffering from Spina Bifida, get the right treatment and surgeries and spread awareness that the disease is preventable via taking folic acid in pregnancies.
